State Route 54 starts at US 27/SR 1 in Troup County and ends in southwest Atlanta, as University Avenue, at the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85).
In Clayton County, SR 54 (known as Jonesboro Road) passes by Southlake Mall (Atlanta), a shopping mall.
In Peachtree City, SR 54 is known as Floy Farr Parkway.
Just west of Peachtree City, State Route 34 has its east terminus into SR 54.
The southern end of State Route 54 from U.S. Route 27 to Hogansville was previously numbered State Route 258 until 1963-1964.[2]

State Route 54 Spur also known as Park Street, is a route to be measured in feet that eases the transition for a traveler going west on State Route 54 wishing to go south on State Route 41 or a traveler going north on State Route 41 wishing to go east on State Route 54. The southern terminus meets as a Y-type intersection with State Route 41 and its northern terminus meets State Route 54 Westbound to its left, State Route 54 Eastbound straight ahead, and a county road to its right.
